1) (раскаивающийся человек, ищущий прощения у Бога за совершённый грех; в частности, в древней церкви так назывались члены церкви, которые за тяжкие грехи подвергались церк. епитимиям; по важности грехов они делились на четыре рода: 1. плачущие (weepers, лат. flentes), которые не имели права входа в храм; 2. слушающие (hearers, лат. audientes), которым позволялось слушать чтение и объяснение Священного Писания за литургией, после чего они выходили из храма и стояли вместе с оглашенными в притворе; 3. припадающие или преклоняющие колена (kneelers, лат. substrati) имели право присутствовать не только при чтении и объяснении Священного Писания, но и при возносимых вслед за тем молитвах и т. п.; перед началом литургии верных они оставляли церковь вместе с оглашенными; 4. стоящие вместе с верными (standers, лат. consistentes) присутствовали за литургией в храме вместе с верными во всё продолжение её, но не имели права приступать к причащению; по усмотрению местного епископа кающиеся могли переводиться из одного класса в другой и от него же получали разрешение) penitent, contrite (person), редко repentant2) (лицо на тайной исповеди, признающееся в своих грехах) confessant, confessary
